Oven Not Heating or Cooking Unevenly: Causes, Checks and Repairs
An oven that will not heat properly usually fails in one of three places: the element or igniter that makes the heat, the sensor that measures it, or the board that decides what to do about it. Because ovens combine high current and, on gas models, a live fuel supply, this is the appliance where the DIY line is drawn earliest.

Electric oven will not heat at all
Likely cause: Failed bake element, broken igniter circuit, or a tripped thermal cut-out.

Oven heats but temperature is wildly off
Likely cause: Drifting oven temperature sensor or a mis-calibrated control board.

- Use an oven thermometer to confirm a real temperature offset before booking.
- Keep the door gasket clean and unbroken so heat is not leaking out.
- Avoid self-clean on older ovens — it is the leading cause of blown thermal fuses.
Stop and call a technician
- Any smell of gas — leave the house and call your gas utility first, then us.
- Sparking, tripped breakers, or scorched wiring at the terminal block.
- Cracked induction or ceramic glass.
- Wall ovens and slide-in ranges that must be pulled from cabinetry.
